Everyone assumes it is rain. It is not, and the numbers are quite firm about that. Weston gets around 914mm of rain a year against a UK average nearer 1,163mm, which makes this a drier town than most of the country. October is the wettest month at roughly 91mm and it is hardly biblical. So the coverings coming off around here are not being drowned. They are being worked loose.
- Wind, first and foremost. The prevailing south-westerly crosses the Bristol Channel and arrives with nothing at all to slow it. It only needs a millimetre of lifted edge to start peeling a covering back.
- Salt, patiently. It rides in on that same wind and goes after every trim, fastener and fixing on the roof. The membrane is usually blameless; the metal holding it down is not.
- Water that never leaves. A roof with no fall becomes a shallow tank. It leans on every joint until one gives, then grows enough moss to block the outlet and make itself worse.
- Condensation mistaken for a leak. Half the cold-deck extensions in Worle have a damp patch that is worst in February and gone by May. That is not a hole. That is the roof's construction.
- Frost, once you head inland. Up towards Winscombe and under the Mendips at Cheddar it is colder than the coast, and standing water that freezes overnight jacks a joint open a little further every time.
- A deck nobody looked at. The most expensive four words in this trade are "we'll go over it". Damp chipboard does not improve under a brand new membrane.

Flat roofing is a trade people only think about when something has gone wrong, so the bar is low and the horror stories are plentiful. Here is what customers around Weston and the levels have said about getting it done properly.
Two firms had already patched the same corner of our extension roof and both times it came back by Christmas.
